Your First Ice Bath in Phuket: A Simple Guide

Contrast therapy — moving between a hot sauna and an ice bath — has become a favourite way to recover after long flights, hikes and humid days. If you have never tried it, here is what to expect at our Secret Garden in Phuket Old Town.

How a round works

Sit in the sauna until you are properly warm, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Step into an ice-bath tub and breathe slowly; for a first time, 1 to 2 minutes is plenty. Then rest in the garden for a few minutes. Most people repeat this two or three times.

Tips for your first time

  • Breathe out slowly as you lower in — the first 30 seconds are the hardest.
  • Keep your hands out of the water if it feels like too much.
  • Drink water between rounds.
  • Skip a heavy meal or alcohol beforehand.
  • Listen to your body and get out whenever you want.

Who should check with a doctor first

If you are pregnant, or have a heart condition or high blood pressure, check with your doctor before using a sauna or ice bath.
