Scalp first, hair second
A normal hair wash cleans the hair. A Japanese-style head spa treats the scalp as skin: it is checked, cleansed, exfoliated and nourished, with long, slow massage in between. Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp, so the hair benefits too.
The steps, one by one
- Scalp scan: a magnifying camera shows oil, dryness or build-up, so you can see what your scalp needs.
- Detox scrub: a cooling scrub loosens oil, sweat and sunscreen at the roots.
- Mask under steam: a keratin or herbal mask soaks in under warm nano steam.
- Water ring: a hydrotherapy ring sends gentle streams of warm water over the scalp. Many guests fall asleep here.
- Serum and blow-dry: a scalp serum, then a professional blow-dry.
Japanese, Korean or Thai?
You will also see "Korean head spa" in Phuket. The two share the same scalp-first idea; the Korean style is best known for the water ring. At Luna Soul we use both, and add a Thai touch with herbal rinses and warm organic coconut oil for the massage.
Good to know before you go
- Allow 90 to 120 minutes, plus a few minutes for the blow-dry.
- Come with hair as it is; no need to wash it first.
- Tell your therapist if your scalp is sensitive or you have just coloured your hair.
- A head spa is a relaxing treatment, not a medical one. For ongoing hair loss, see a dermatologist.
