Head Spa and Hair Loss: An Honest Answer

It is one of the questions we hear most. The short answer: a head spa keeps your scalp clean, comfortable and relaxed, but it is not a treatment for hair loss. Here is where the line sits.

What a head spa can do

  • Clean the scalp properly: a detox scrub lifts oil, sweat and product build-up from around the roots.
  • Let you see your scalp: at Phuket Town the scalp scan shows oiliness, flaking or redness on screen.
  • Relax the head, neck and shoulders: long, slow massage helps you switch off.
  • Leave the hair softer: a nourishing mask and a blow-dry finish every programme.

What it cannot do

No head spa can promise that hair will grow back. Hair loss has many possible causes, including genes, hormones, stress, illness, diet and some medicines, and only a doctor can find out which one applies to you. If a salon promises regrowth after a few sessions, be careful.

When to see a doctor

  • Hair is coming out suddenly, or in patches.
  • You have been losing more hair than usual for several weeks.
  • The scalp is itchy, painful, red or scaly and it does not settle.
  • Hair loss comes with other changes in how you feel.

If you still want a head spa

  • Tell your therapist about any hair loss or scalp treatment before you start, so they can adjust the pressure.
  • If you use a prescribed scalp treatment, ask your doctor whether to pause it on the day.
  • Choose a programme with a scalp scan if you would like to see your scalp up close.
